About Drooping Eyelids (Ptosis) & Excess Eyelid Skin
Drooping Eyelids (Ptosis) & Excess Eyelid Skin As skin loses elasticity and the muscles supporting the eyelid weaken with age, many patients develop drooping upper lids or an accumulation of excess skin that can hang over the lash line. This is one of the most frequent age-related changes we see in patients over 65, and while it's often dismissed as a cosmetic issue, it can progress to the point of blocking peripheral or even central vision, making everyday tasks like reading, driving, or navigating stairs more difficult.
An evaluation typically includes a visual field test to determine whether the drooping is affecting functional vision, which also helps establish whether insurance may cover treatment. Depending on the cause and severity, treatment may involve surgical removal of excess skin, tightening of the eyelid muscle, or both. Most patients report a noticeably more open, alert appearance and improved vision within a few weeks of recovery.
