You should go to a hospital emergency room (ER) if you or someone else is experiencing a medical emergency—a condition that is life-threatening or could cause serious harm if not treated right away.
Here are common reasons to go to the Hospital ER:
Life-Threatening Symptoms
Chest pain or pressure (especially if it radiates to the arm, jaw, or back — may signal a heart attack)
Severe difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Signs of stroke: sudden numbness, weakness (especially on one side), confusion, slurred speech, vision problems, loss of coordination
Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
Uncontrolled bleeding
Fainting, dizziness, or loss of consciousness
Seizures, especially if new or prolonged
Severe abdominal pain
High fever with stiff neck, confusion, or sensitivity to light (possible meningitis)
Other Serious Situations
Serious injuries (e.g. broken bones with visible deformity, deep wounds, major burns)
Head trauma (especially with loss of consciousness or vomiting)
Sudden confusion, disorientation, or inability to speak
Severe allergic reactions (e.g. swelling of face/lips, difficulty breathing)
Poisoning or drug overdose
Persistent vomiting or diarrhea leading to dehydration
Suicidal thoughts or self-harm behavior
If You're Unsure
If you’re not sure it’s an emergency but symptoms are severe or worsening quickly, don’t wait—go to the ER or call 911
For less urgent situations (e.g. minor cuts, low-grade fever, mild allergic reactions), we can help. .
